Mezzo-soprano Christina English recently made her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall with pianist Katie Reimer, performing Malcolm Peyton's {Songs from Walt Whitman}. Following this collaboration, she became a member of Mimesis Ensemble, a New York City based group dedicated to performing works of living composers. Equally comfortable on the operatic stage, she will perform the role of Dorabella in {Cosi fan tutte} with Riverside Theatreworks in February 2010. Recent roles include Mercedes, Hansel, and The Sorceress. A devoted performer of art song, she was recently awarded Second Prize in Voice in the Grieg Festival Young Artists Competition in Florida, performing selections from Grieg's {Haugtussa}. She is also a sought after interpreter of contemporary works, and was invited by composer John Heiss to perform his {Songs from James Joyce} in New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, as well as by composer Mohammed Fairouz to sing his {Three Shakespeare Songs} with the Mimesis Ensemble. Additional recital repertoire includes Montsalvatge's {Cinco Canciones Negras}, Schumann's {Frauenliebe und Leben}, Stravinsky's {Three Songs from William Shakespeare", and Satie's {Trois Melodies de 1916}. Her operatic training and performance includes the Seagle Music Colony, OperaWorks, Operafestival di Roma, Longwood Opera, and the Crittenden Opera Studio. She earned her Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, where she continues her studies with Carole Haber. A native of San Jose, CA, she earned her B.A. in Music and a minor in dance from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
