Mezzo-soprano Christina English recently made her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall with pianist Katie Reimer, performing Malcolm Peyton's Songs from Walt Whitman. This collaboration led to a position as resident mezzo-soprano of Mimesis Ensemble, a New York City based group dedicated to performing works of living composers. Upcoming performances with Mimesis include concerts in Merkin Hall and at Columbia University. Equally comfortable on the operatic stage, Ms. English's 2008-2009 season includes La Badessa in Suor Angelica with Boston Opera Collaborative, Hansel in Riverside Theatreworks' production of Hansel and Gretel, and the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas with Newport Baroque.
In the summer of 2007, she was a Young Artist at the Seagle Music Colony, where she sang the role of Sappho in Mark Adamo's Lysistrata. In the summer of 2008, she attended the renowned OperaWorks training program and returned to the Seagle Music Colony to perform in workshop productions of new operas by Thomas Pasatieri, Joe Illick, and Jorge MartÃn.
An avid performer of contemporary works, she was selected by composer John Heiss to perform his Songs from James Joyce in New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall. Additional recital repertoire includes Montsalvatge's Cinco Canciones Negras, Grieg's Haugtussa, Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben, Stravinsky's Three Songs from William Shakespeare, and Satie's Trois Melodies de 1916.
She earned her Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, where she continues her studies with Carole Haber. A native of San Jose, CA, she earned her B.A. in Music and a minor in dance from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She also studied acting, dance, and voice at American Musical Theater San Jose's Artists Institute
