San Francisco native, Jonelyn Langenstein, is well on her way to a bright career. She is currently a Young Artist for Connecticut Lyric Opera and has been included in all of their productions this season. She performed her first Queen of the Night in an abridged version of Mozart’s Magic Flute, Barbarina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and covered the role of Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. With Boston Opera Collaborative she sang the role of Gretel in Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel and will return in the summer to sing Sister Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. This spring Ms. Langenstein also made her professional musical theatre debut with Barnstormers Theatre as Maysie in Slow Dance with a Hot Pick-Up. Ms. Langenstein is a recent Master of Music graduate of New England Conservatory where she performed on both the main stage and in the Perkins Opera scenes programs. Her roles included Miles in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, directed by David Gately, and the First Spirit in Mozart’s Magic Flute, both under the baton of maestro John Greer. In addition, she performed Echo in Cavalli’s La Calisto. Ms. Langenstein’s scene work included Célie from Pasatieri’s Signor Deluso, Belinda from Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, and Fortuna from Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea. As a student of the conservatory Ms. Langenstein worked extensively with Metropolitan Opera director Marc Astafan and Utah Opera’s Patricia Weinmann.
Last spring Ms. Langenstein had the pleasure of performing selected Gilbert & Sullivan scenes with Opera Boston, singing the roles of both Yum-Yum and Mabel under the direction of Portland Opera’s Stephen S. Beaudoin. In the summer Ms. Langenstein joined Intermezzo Opera as a Young Artist for their summer festival in West Palm Beach. She performed numerous roles including Pastourelle, Chauve-Souris, L’Horloge, and Chat noir in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges directed by New York City Opera’s David Grabarkewitz and Metropolitan Opera conductor J. David Jackson. Ms. Langenstein is a frequent performer with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. Her solo debut was under the baton of Gary Sheldon for Idaho’s Festival at Sandpoint. As the Musicfest Northwest Young Artist Competition winner, Ms. Langenstein was a soloist in the final concert conducted by Fabio Costa. At Spokane Opera’s Diamonds & Divas New Year’s Eve Gala, she has rung in the new year on numerous occasions to great acclaim with conductor Dean Williamson. Ms. Langenstein is a district winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was the recipient of the Most Talented Young Singer award. She is also a two-time N.A.T.S. competition winner and completed her undergraduate degree in Music and Arts Administration from Whitworth College.
