Joshua May, tenor, has performed such recent engagements as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte (Metro West Opera), Spoletta in Tosca (Lowell Opera House), Bill in A Hand of Bridge and Giraflier/Gros-Minet in the Tales of Offenbach (Boston Metro Opera), Parpignol in La Bohème (Aspen Opera Theater), Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Boy 1 in Trouble in Tahiti (NEC Opera Theater). Mr. May has previously performed a variety of operatic roles, some of his favorites include Mayor Upfold in Albert Herring, a North American premier as Dorimante in L’Amor Marinaro, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, and Lippo Fiorentino in Street Scene. Mr. May has been featured in such partial roles as Jupiter in Semele, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Idomeneo in Idomeneo, Valére in Tartuffe, Alfredo in La Traviata, Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore, Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Lionel in Martha.
This summer, Mr. May will sing Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Remendado in Carmen with Opera in the Ozarks. Additionally, Mr. May will sing Sam in Susannah with the Halifax Summer Opera. This fall, Mr. May will premier several roles for the Contemporary Americana Music Festival in Boston. Mr. May has been a young artist with the Aspen Music Festival, Harrower Opera Workshop, Intermezzo Opera Festival, and the Tyrolean Opera Program. Mr. May is an avid recitalist and oratorio singer, performing recently as a soloist in Mozart's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, and Dubois's Seven Last Words of Christ. Mr. May recently performed “A Shakespearean Recital” at the New England Conservatory, featuring music from the baroque to contemporary compositions set to the works of William Shakespeare. Mr. May holds degrees from University of Florida (B.M. Voice Performance 2003), as well as Grand Valley State University (B.A. French 2007). Mr. May received his Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory. He received a second Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy with a music-in-education certification from NEC. Mr. May will begin his D.M.A. in Voice Performance at the University of Connecticut in the fall.
