Rachel Selan, mezzo-soprano

Rachel Selan, mezzo-soprano, is becoming a sought after talent in the Boston area. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, she recently completed her Graduate Diploma at the New England Conservatory where she begans her studies with current teacher Patricia Craig. Notable operatic and musical theatre performance credits include The Medium (Mrs. Nolan, Baba cover),Le nozze di Figaro (Marcellina), Gianni Schicchi (Zita), Suor Angelica (Principessa, Badessa), The Mikado (Pitti Sing), Into the Woods (Baker’s Wife), L’Enfant et les Sortelèges (Squirrel/Cat cover), The Music Man (Alma Hix), The King and I (Lady Thiang cover), and Dialogues of the Carmelites (Sister Claire).
Miss Selan had the honor of working on the world-premiere of Sara McKinnon, under the direction of Mark Medoff, as well as the role of Fay Doyle in the west-coast premiere of Lowell Lieberman’s Miss Lonelyhearts. In the spring of 2008, she made her Jordan Hall debut in NEC’s production of Cole: A Celebration of the Life, Words, and Music of Cole Porter; since returning to the Jordan Hall stage as a soloist in the world-premiere of Percy Grainger’s Random Rounds, as Sally in Samuel Barber's A Hand of Bridge and most recently in Side by Side by Sondheim.
Her 2009-2010 season has thus far included working with Boston Opera Collaborative on the title role of Carmen, covering the role of Lorena and ensemble in the world-premiere of Larry Bell's Holy Ghosts, and most recently performing in BOC's production of The Crucible (Rebecca Nurse). Upcoming engagements include Madame Armfelt in BOC's February production of Sondheim's A Little Night Music.
She received her Bachelor in Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder before going on to study for a Masters in Vocal Performance at the University of Southern California. Mrs. Selan is a student of Patricia Craig.She would like to thank her past and present teachers, and her family and friends for all of their love and support.
