LA BOHÈME
By Giacomo Puccini
March 2-4 and 9-11, 2012
Puccini's beloved opera tells us the stories of poet Rodolfo, seamstress Mimì and their compatriots in Bohemian Paris, as they grapple with artistic passions, romantic entanglements and fuming jealousies. As Rodolfo and Mimi struggle to make their relationship stand against the looming shadows of poverty and illness, their love endures, but not without reminders of human frailty and folly. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD
By Jacques Offenbach
July 26-29, 2012
In this riotous parody of the tragic Greek myth, unhappily married Orpheus and Eurydice look for an escape from each other and end up - quite literally - on a journey to Hell. Upon seeing the fabulous time had by all in the Underworld, including the famous "Can-Can" dance, Eurydice decides that dying would be preferable to staying with her husband. Though Orpheus would be just as happy to see her go, he is forced to try to save her, providing not a single serious moment in the entire show. Sung in English with supertitles.
