A Site-Specific Opera

Turtle Swamp Brewing, Jamaica Plain
April 12-22, 2018

A Modern Feast

This fresh take on Puccini’s beloved classic takes place at Turtle Swamp Brewing in Jamaica Plain. This modern-dress staging brings audiences face-to-face and side-by-side with Puccini’s bohemian twenty-somethings to eat and drink, live and celebrate the joy and pain of being young, free, penniless and in love.

Accompanied by 7 piece ensemble.

"Boston Opera Collaborative has found a new way to stage the work by demolishing the distance between the audience and the action that breathes new life into the opera."

"[S]tage director Greg Smucker delivered in spades, peppering his production with lots of clever details that informed character in really interesting ways."

"The entire production is full of brilliant little touches...from Marcello's angry munching on chicken wings throughout Musetta's Waltz to the way the lights flickered off during the landlord Benoit's short scene. The attention to the chemistry between the characters was also wonderful to watch."

"[T]his modern treatment was a valiant effort to reconceive this classic with a talented cast of young artists in an alternative space."

"The cast stepped up to the challenge of characters who countless opera superstars have championed, crafting performances that settled nicely in the intimate space."

"Known for his work with experimental theatre, BOC artistic director Greg Smucker was poised to create something fresh and innovative with this beloved masterpiece."
